The Horn of Africa serves as a critical hub for mixed migration and is a source, transit and destination area for asylum seekers and socio-economic migrants from throughout the region, as well as middle-east. There is also evidence that region is a source, destination, and transit country for girls, boys, women and men. 

On September 19, 2016, the UN General Assembly adopted the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, under which a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was initiated. The Global Compact offers new opportunity to improve migration governance and cope with the challenges associated with today's migration. Today, it is estimated that on average around 260 million people are moving around the world every year.
